Invention News: CALLING ALL MOTHERS OF INVENTION:

The Invention NewsAnonymous writes " American moms are taking the world by storm—nearly half of all privately-held businesses (10.6 million) in the United States are owned by women, and more than a third of these women have children under 18 at home . Because there are millions more moms worth nurturing, Whirlpool brand is announcing its second annual Mothers of Invention Grant, a search for moms with brilliant ideas.

The 2006 Whirlpool Brand Mother of Invention Grant helps moms realize their potential by providing necessary business resources including seed money and expert advice. One grand-prize winner will receive a package featuring a $20,000 grant, a new home office and a two-day business boot camp to leverage Whirlpool expertise, including product development and marketing. An additional $24,000 in grants will be distributed to four runners-up.

“Being awarded the Mother of Invention Grant opened many doors to resources I would not have had otherwise,” said 2005 grand prize winner, Theresa Riep, who created a product to improve child safety measures. “I appreciate the continued help and support. Although raising a family while starting a business is a challenge, the grant, advice and camaraderie have definitely alleviated some of the growing pains.”

The call for entries opens on Mother’s Day, May 14 and ends July 30, 2006. Submissions will be judged based on weighted scores of the following: creating a solution to an unmet need; uniqueness in the current marketplace; offering a viable business solution; and the story behind the creation. Whirlpool brand based the grant’s judging criteria on its own product/innovation guidelines.

“As a brand, we rely upon the insights of today’s busy moms for ideas on how to help ease their very active lives,” said Audrey Reed-Granger, director of consumer insight for the Whirlpool brand. “The Mother of Invention Grant was created to acknowledge the inventive ways American mothers create solutions to their own challenges every day. We recognize moms to be the most coveted consumers on the planet, and as such shouldn’t they have an opportunity to bring a product or service to market?”

Note: Thanks so much for this submission! Here you had given us the scoop on the 12th of May, and it's not posted until the 24th of June. I apologize a million times over for not getting this posted in a timely manner. I've been away from the site for quite a while now with work unfortunately, but I plan to be here much more often as time goes on. Very glad to at least have it posted before the deadline, if only by a month. If you have any more invention related scoops like this, please, submit them! Thanks so very much, and good luck with the contest ladies.

Invention News: Hard Fought Business Method Patent is Issued Today

The Invention NewsAnonymous writes "
Took 6.5 years, a hard fought business method patent is issued today(12/20/2005).

A new patent on dynamic pricing business method is issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office today. It took the US Patent Office and the Patent Board of Appeal and Interference a total of almost 7 years to examine and issue this patent. Dynamic pricing such as online auction has created successful businesses like ebay.com and priceline.com. The newly issued patent covers a broad range of potential online models, including online auctions, e-commerce, online games, and more. Buyer’s purchase price of a product or service is scaled to the buyer’s performance during a price-determining-activity such as online game.

Invention News: Seven Reasons Why New Products Fail

The Invention Newscannon writes "The most optimistic success rate I have run across for new product ideas is about 3%. In other words, 97% of product ideas never successfully enter the market. There are lots of reasons for this low level of performance, but there is a consistency around a few common mistakes that routinely present themselves with inventors and new product marketers. These are not the only reasons, but if you can avoid these mistakes, you can greatly improve your chances for success.

The Product: The single biggest shortcoming in new product introductions is not fully understanding the product, its usage and the target market. A dead give away to this problem is when I ask inventors to define the target market and they tell me, "Everybody." If your target market is everybody, you are doomed to failure. It is like shooting a gun at a bull’s eye. You will most likely never hit the bull’s eye if you are aiming at the whole target.

The Opportunity: One of the most difficult questions to answer in preparing a new product for market is defining the opportunity. Sadly, there is not enough information available about most product categories and if you have something that is entirely new, there are no reference points, but this is critical information for the decision- makers you will be dealing with. You must have some verifiable estimate for the potential of this product.

Invention News: Three Key Steps to Invention Marketing

The Invention Newscannon writes "Ever see a new product and say to yourself, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Well, if you stop to think about it, probably everyone one of us has either had an idea for a new product, believe we are capable of a new product idea or knows of someone else who has had a new product idea.

To get an idea of the magnitude of new product ideas and activity, I did a quick search on the word “inventor” on google and back came 9,300,000 websites. If you do the same thing with “invention” you get 18,000,000 listings. We are not talking hundreds or even thousands, but tens of millions. The generation of new product ideas or inventions in our world is huge. Yet when most people stop to think about the people they have been exposed to with new ideas, they are lucky to think of even one who has achieved any kind of success with their idea.

Invention News: EANS to be filed with Accel-A-Tech

The Invention News

Scouting inventor's stories for the site, I came across a press release from "Accel-A-Tech" which sounded like just what the EANS are in need of.

Accel-A-Tech launches its new homeland security technology accelerator that will identify, nurture, and accelerate the growth of technology-based businesses in the homeland security, first responder, and national defense industries by providing the businesses with space and infrastructure, hands-on management assistance, access to funding sources, critical business and technical support services, seasoned executive mentoring, and administrative and marketing services.

 Invention News: Inventing Made Easy

The Invention News

The first step for the would-be inventor is of course to invent something new and unique that fills a void in currently available solutions. That old adage about necessity being the mother of invention couldn't be more true. Invention starts with a good idea about how to solve a common problem. Once you have your idea in mind, now we move on to the more serious side of the business, making innovation reality.

The inventor with a new invention in mind must make the critical move of documenting that invention. There is a special place to do this, a restaurant napkin may work as a "rough draft" but that simply cannot be the only place the invention is documented. Your new invention should be documented completely in what is called an "Inventor's Notebook". These notebooks are available from many sources online, and even in some local stores. The key points to look for when shopping for an inventor's notebook are a "stitched binding" and sequentially numbered pages. Once you get your inventor's notebook, keep it only for recording your inventions! No doodling, or grocery lists. Never tear out pages for other use, always maintain the integrity of the original notebook.

Invention News: Inventor Owned Businesses and Business Structure

The Invention News

So you have a great invention but you have had really terrible luck trying to sell it to major manufacturers, or get it into the local monster marts. What are you to do? You may consider building a business around your invention. This is a tough road to follow, but in the end it can be the most profitable for the inventor anyway. Many inventors are naturally endowed with what is commonly referred to as an entrepreneurial spirit, well it's time to use that to your advantage.

Again be warned that this is not for everyone. You must be ready to spend long hours tirelessly working to make your business succeed. You must learn to budget, and stick as close to that budget as possible. You will have to learn a wide variety of new skills from accountant to machinist, and everything in between. If this type of thing doesn't interest you, perhaps you would be better off going back to the drawing board. Inventors may times feel pushed into this option however, so this may be your only viable road to success.

 Invention News: Invention Promotion Scams

The Invention News

Quite funny actually, there is a definite ebb and flow to the world of IP, and the world at large for that matter. I had been thinking for the past week about a ripping article to write on the follies bound for inventors who use invention promotion companies. I have been beat to the punch though this time, and therefore I will provide you some links to the stories which I have found which were written within the last few days, as well as resources provided by the Federal government about these operations.

That's what I mean by "ebb and flow" evidently these places have it coming this week, and I truly hope some sort of act of God occurs allowing the great number of them to spontaneously combust. In the US, honorable business practices are a key to success in the long term. These companies do not play by the rules, and they do not have honorable business practices. It is therefore the right, and as I see it, the duty of the IP community to tear them apart, limb from limb.

Although these articles mentioned the folly of pursuit of such avenues, I am going to feel free to add my own two cents here, as I have had personal experience with a variety of these companies, through my own inventive efforts, and other inventors who have contacted me pleading their case against these entities. Personally, I don't think any of these articles went far enough. So I shall unleash my savage nature for a couple of paragraphs and let you know exactly where I stand on this issue.

Invention News: EANS Are Now Patent Pending

The Invention News

Yes indeed, after many laborious hours typing a very complete provisional patent application, the EANS (Emergency Alert Notification System)are now patent pending. All this time spent with the project has been well worth it, and hopefully will prove to be Very lucrative within this year.

However, this time being devoted solely to the provisional application for the EANS has taken precious time away from my favorite past times, my blog, and of course this site, the Lone Inventor I should be able to dedicate some more time to these ends now, which is a great deal and I look forward to talking to, and with all of you some more.

The future of the EANS will now be to develop a corporation around these systems, and that's what I'm currently working on. If anyone knows some great tips, tricks, or simply has some good insight into how to obtain corporate financing for a fledgling corporation, I sure would appreciate the feedback. I look forward to installing the system in a city near you. :)

Invention News: Project 1 being prototyped at the Lone Labs

The Invention News

A small and unique innovation is currently being prototyped. It has been labled "project 1" (For the benefit of the site) The device is somewhat small, it can fit in the palm of your hand, and most people have needed it many times throughout your life.

The device, is cheap to manufacturer and would yield significant retail value in many markets.
