In my first essay, I disclosed the observation that there was a fundamentally important but unknown mechanism in radio reception called SCAM zones or suppressed carrier amplitude modulated FM or AM modes of reception.
In the simpler case of AM, the standard text book expression for AM is as follows
f1(t)= (1 + m cos wmt)cos wct where m is the modulation index.
With an echo voltage at 180 degrees adding without loss gives
f1(t) +f2(t) = -pi (wm/wc )m sin wmt cos wct
The standard AM has been converted to suppressed carier AM and cannot be demodulated with an envelope detector.
It is almost impossible to demodulate DSSB with a synchronous demodulator since there are so long periods where the carrier is missing especially when the modulation is low in amplitude and in frequency. It is only possible with a pilot tone as is used in stereo FM reception where you can lock to the 19 kHz signal.
It is now feasible with the invention of the amplitude locked loop (ALL) US Patent No. 5341106 to regenerate the synchronous carrier without needing a pilot tone even when the carrier to noise ratio becomes negative. With this new approach is is possible to achieve a circuit Q value of say 100 million at 100 Hz. This is necessary for reliable communication and is not feasible by any standard technique certainly not at such a low frequency.
