Hello, I'm biology major student and have an idea that stems from my need. It involves reusing or redesigning something existing for different purpose. I know the device is simple and should not be hard to create because it already exist out there in other form. However, I'm not electronic expert, so I don't know how to create a prototype for it. How should I go about creating this prototype so I can put something in the patent application? Is it possible to patent something that doesn't have a prototype but can be describe with just words?

I never patented anything, but i think you have no need to have a prototype to have a patent. I don't think that the person that is going to register it is going to test every patent there is. If you patent a new kind of major surgery, i find it hard to believe you're gonna have to do one on the patent office or take a video of one when the person there doesn't have a clue about medicine and surgeries. I think that if the patent is something dumb that doesn't work, you're not really protecting anything worth paying to copy so, they don't have a problem with that:)
But i know little about patent stuff. _________________ Fausto Fonseca - Portugal
