1 Your invention must be realistic

At this stage, we must take a look at the difference between an idea, and an invention. You cannot patent an idea, only an invention. It is very crucial to understand and accurately judge for yourself the difference, otherwise it's back to the drawing board.

Is it realistic?

The inventor must think about many things, and have a very open mind to be successful, however we can't let that cloud our good judgement. You may invision a system of transporting goods instantaniously from one part of the globe to another, without the need for ships, trains, and trucks, but if you cannot make it work - it is only an idea, not an invention.

Now when I say be realistic, do not be discouraged if your invention is not a part of our reality as of yet. Many inventions over the centuries have seemed to push the limits of reality beyond where they were previously thought to rest. These types of inventions however always have the most impact on mankind.

Again, for all intents and purposes if you cannot make your idea work, it is still just that. Invention is the thing that puts an anchor on your idea holding it into our reality. No matter how outlandish, if you can make it work you have a legitamate invention.

2 Is the world ready for your invention?

Realistically examine the world's capabilities

Yes, in a decade, maybe a century the type of technology you long for will be able to come to fruition. Don't be too hasty to make these desicions, the rest of your life may be affected. Chasing after something untouchable has always been the strong suit, and pitfall of inventors. There is a fine line to tread here. You must orbit out to the fine essence of reality to retrieve innovation, just be careful you don't bring back too much baggage you can't use. If the innovation is for your great, great, grandchildren, leave it in the box.

3 Be honest with yourself

You may be leaning toward one side or the other, having difficulty making a decision. Questions need to be asked for you to be sure. The next paragraphs will help you understand what is needed to make your decision

Be honest with yourself

We all have the capablity to "fool" ourselves into believing almost anything we want. Scientific studies prove placebo works, and why? Because you believe that it does, therefore it does. The same is true with invention. You are quite able to convince yourself that your product is feasible, when in reality it is not. You may be able to reason the ability of future generations to create such a thing, but you have to also realize that the odds are mounted against you producing it now. These are all integral parts of being honest with yourself. No invention is worth your entire life's time and effort, only to leave it unfinished.

4 A crucial turning point

Make a crucial decision

You have come to a turning point, a crucial moment in your life. If you make the wrong desicion it could cost you. You may figure it out before it's to late, however much time and money could have been lost in the mean time. Make sure that you are confident you can develop your innovation, and now. A little far fetched is just fine. Really far-fetched may be a little far flung, although sometimes things are developed decades early. Is this one of those inventions? This always leads to significant scientific and societal breakthroughs, but things like this are more difficult to attain, making your road to success much more difficult.

5 Live with your decision

Take your decision in stride

Make your decision wisely, and don't look back. Move on immidiately with the next project. Innovation will be there waiting to reveal witty inventions to you, you just have to be listening. There are uncountable masses more where that last one came from.
