1 Chosing an Innovation

I wish there was a right answer for this question for everyone, but there is not. There is however a right answer for you and that's what is important. Your personal style will be in the drivers seat when you decide to make that first vital step.

Determining your strong areas can equal success

Take for instance, you are over at a friends house helping to clean the gutters. Your friend falls down, ripping the gutter off and a huge mess is made. Right away, you are able to see innovation that would dramatically improve the gutter cleaning process, but what should you do with it? You do not have gutters on your house, many of your friends have a "gutter helmet" or another gutter guard product. Your product is different and better, what should you do with your innovation?

What's Your Style?

In order to truly succeed in this business you have got to know what you are good at. What do you like to do, what are your hobbies, and how do they fit in with your inventing? The answers to these questions will help you determine what your style is.

Everyone wants to be an inventor, and everyone is at one time or another, but not many at all take the steps neccesary to bring thier inventions to the world. In order to succeed as an inventor, this is exactly what you have to do. You have to be tenacious, relentless, and tireless in your efforts to get your product out there.

When you are planning to put all that time and effort into it, doesn't it make sense to be working in areas that you already enjoy? Being an inventor is fun! You get to create and use things that the world has not seen before, but it takes a lot of work, at many times very un rewarding work. With all this adversity in your path, it certainly helps to enjoy what you are working on.

To this end, consider inventing in an area that you enjoy and understand. Sometimes this is reffered to as staying within your area of expertise. If you are unfamiliar with electronics, and have an idea for an electronic device, what will you do to produce it? How about a mechanical product that you don't have the skill to build? These obstacles can be overcome, much more easily these days with the internet, however they do represent more time, effort, and yes money being put into the development of your invention.
